Our Item 10282 - Ondine Thermostatic Valve Replacement Cartridge and Rebuild Kit includes the thermostatic cartridge with o-rings pre-installed as well as the two o-rings that fit into the oval shaped grooves of the Ondine valve cover plate. We do not currently include the o-rings for the check-valves, but they are relatively easy to find at your local plumbing supply store.

The O-rings used on the Check/Stop Valves of the Ondine Thermostatic Valve Models 25072 (3/4 inch) and the 25071 (1/2 inch) are -113 HEAT RESISTANT (.549±.007 ID x .103±.003 CS inches) and -117 (.799±.010 ID x .103±.003 CS inches). VASELINE and other petroleum greases tend to attack rubber and reduce the life of o-rings. Use Silicone Grease instead.

The "Commando 450", but better!

OK, for those of you that remember it, this classic Seinfeld scene is the closing of a terrible experience many of us have had. One day, shower heads suddenly became wimpy. Shampoo's hard to get out, soap lingers, plus, you don't get the all-over-your-body adulation a good shower should give. Here's why.

Many years ago there was a limit put on the flow rate of things-that-use-water could use – shower heads included. 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM) is the MAXIMUM anybody who sells shower heads can have on their products, period, end of story. That's the law. But, before this law, there were plenty of manufacturers who made their showerheads to work well without regard to a limit. Today, most showerheads are made WITH THIS LIMIT IN MIND during engineering. As a result, you get showerheads with tiny holes shooting needles at you. That's what they call a "high-pressure showerhead". Not that there's anything wrong with that. After all we all have our differences.

Back the the point. Manufacturers started putting "flow restrictors" and "flow regulators" into their products to make them legal to sell. As a result, showers that worked well at 4, 5, even 7 GPM were a bit weak. Gradually, engineering changed the product to work better at low flow rates. Don't get me wrong, a good-quality shower head today gives a great shower at these and even lower flow rates. And we must all do out part for the conservation of resources.

But to those of you who feel that while some guys have their own private golf course to water, a high-flow shower head is a small indulgence to be had. After all, America was once based on demand-side economics; let them charge for the water if is so precious!

We have two items that are not the exact Commando 450, but close, and maybe even better. The 4-inch Brass Rainmaker had 50 jets as compared to the Commando's 26. And the 6-inch Brass Rainmaker has 76! We also have the Elite Massage Showerhead Shower Head in both Chome and Chrome with Black. Going back to the Seinfeld clip, you'll see this item fourth from the right in polished brass.

To get your flow up, check out our section How to increase water pressure through a shower head or hand held shower. Now remember, water is everywhere and it always recycles itself back to water. (It's not like it gets contaminated by radiation going through a shower head.) But droughts do happen, and you may want to keep that regulator close by, especially if your water and energy bills get out-of-hand. The laws were put in place for the manufacturers to follow. We do not know of any laws regulating the removal of the flow regulator. And if your shower head is still wimpy, you may just have bad house pressure. Find fixes for that here.

Unfortunately, we have not had much luck locating the Classic Massage handshower Ferris uses as the microphone. This one in particular was called the "X-90". The Classic line by Ondine was very popular with RV owners. It has a thumb control switch on the back that let you adjust from spray to hold to massage. If anyone has a stash of these, call us!

All About Shower Spray Selections

A good shower can turn a good day into a great one!

With shower head manufacturers competing to be the best in the business, there are a dizzying array of shower spray options. With so many spray options, how can you choose? At the ShowerStore.com, we have decades of experience and have watched shower sprays progress over the years. There are some fundamental ways to form a spray pattern. And most sprays are based on these fundamentals. So let’s take a look at what makes a shower spray and what they are good for so you can get the showerhead with the sprays that you want.

Regular spray

The “regular” spray is the thing we are all familiar with: a spray of water coming at us from a shower head. All shower heads have a regular spray. There are two basic ways of forming a regular spray: A channel patterns where each pray is directed out of a hole (think garden watering can), or a random pattern where water is shot out randomly (think of a basic garden sprinkler). You can tell the difference by looking for individual spray streams versus a random spray pattern.

Directed hole pattern

A directed hole spray offers a rounder, softer droplet. These sprays maintain their water temperature better than the alternative random spray, which means you can save on your gas or electric bill because you use less hot water. They feel gentler on the skin, although in some adjustable spray models they can be made needly for a more invigorating effect.

Random spray pattern

A random spray pattern is what many of us are familiar with from a gym locker room or a navy shower. These sprays direct a burst of water into a cone, which comes out in a random spray pattern. These showerheads offer an invigorating effect because the spray drops are smaller. The Oxygenics shower head uses this approach with added air. Most showers offering this type of spray are less expensive models because the pattern is easier to make. They are sometimes sold as high-pressure shower heads because it feels like there is more pressure coming out of the showerhead.

Massage Spray

The "massage" spray pattern is based on a spray jet that pulsates out of a small number of holes. One set of holes is temporally covered as water exits another set of holes, then those holes are opened as another set is closed. This pattern continues and creates a pulsating jet of water, which may help relieve stress. It may also relieve some minor aches and pains. ALWAYS CONSULT A PHYSICIAN BEFORE TREATING ACHES AND PAINS WITH THESE OR ANY OTHER PRODUCTS. When used underwater, the pulsating effect splashes less and may be more comforting.

Aeration spray

The "aeration spray" – sometimes called "Champagne" – is a flow of water that has been infused with air. Tiny air bubbles make this spray pattern super soft. It’s great for bathing infants, or for people with sensitive skin.

Mist Spray

The "mist" spray pattern is created by forcing water through tiny holes. As the water exits, it breaks apart into millions of tiny droplets. These droplets rapidly loose their heat. They also evaporate quickly leaving the bather with a cooling sensation. The mist spray is great for hot summer days, or after a long, hard workout. Many mist sprays give you a tingling sensation, which helps invigorate the body.

Other Sprays

Center Jet or Intense Spray

A “center jet” is a regular spray that has been concentrated into a small area. These are great for getting shampoo out of hair quickly.

Combination sprays

Combination sprays are often a regular spray combined with another spray. The pattern provides another option for the bather. Some manufacturers name these sprays “combination”, or they may give them a unique name like “surf massage”.

Twirling sprays

The Moen Revolution Shower Massage offers a twirling shower spray. In addition to being fun to look at, their effect is to draw a circle on your body. This pattern is like a regular spray or massage, but it moves in a circular pattern creating a different effect than a fixed version of the same spray.

Full-Cone sprays, hollow sprays, and full-body shower spray coverage

Not all shower sprays are created equally. Not even all rain sprays are created equally. Shower spray functions can vary quite a bit between brands and sometimes even between different models from the same brand.

Next to maximizing water pressure, full-body spray coverage is one of the most important features customers look for in a shower head. Many shower heads have a "hollow" spray with the water going out in a perfect circular spray pattern, leaving an empty water-free area in the middle. Rainmaker-style shower heads, like the 4-inch Brass Rainmaker by Ondine eliminate this problem by having spray nozzles all over the face of the shower head. This works fine with single-function shower heads that may or may not adjust for intensity. However, multi-function showerheads, like ones with with aeration, mist, or massage sprays usually require different sized nozzles with different placement.

Some manufacturers have solved the problem by creating "Full-Cone" sprays. Full-Cone spray still have the nozzles set in a circular pattern, but instead of one ring of spray nozzles, there are 2 or 3 concentric spray nozzle patterns with the center ones pointing the water inward, eliminating the "hollow" center.

Another solution manufacturers have used to minimize the hollow center is by creating combination sprays, where the outer spray ring is a rain spray, but the inner spray nozzles feature specialty sprays. Combination shower sprays usually do provide for full body coverage, but because of the additional water coming out, are often less intense than a full-function spray.

One of ShowerStore.com’s founders, Henning Zieger, is a veteran of the plumbing category. In 1971 his father founded Interbath, Inc., which helped bring the handheld shower – popular in Europe – to America. Zieger grew up in a shower head factory – literally. This week, the ShowerStore.com staff had the opportunity to try out several handheld shower heads and shower heads from Great Vibrations by Interbath. Our experiences with these products were surprising.

One of our favorite products we tested was the Monterey Hand Held Shower Head Set. As far as handheld shower head sets, the Monterey is inexpensive ($11.97 – $14.97, based on finish and quantity purchased) and looks fairly unassuming. The curve in the handle makes this handheld shower an excellent alternative to a fixed overhead shower head on a swan or s-shaped shower arm.

The Monterey offers three spray functions, which is quite a bit less than many others out there. However, these sprays stood out among its competitors. The rainspray offered much better water pressure that a lot of other multi-featured handheld showers. Since the question, "how do I increase my water pressure?," is asked of us quite a bit, this was very noticeable. The Monterey handheld shower also features a Full-Cone full-body spray spray which eliminates the hollow center that many shower sprays have. The water pressure maintains its strength when switched to the combination spray. Often, combination sprays feel less forceful due to the increase in outlets for the water to flow through. The Mist spray is very pleasant and soothing, and leaves the skin with a slight tingling sensation when finished.

Ensuring your handheld shower head maintains it's angle

Handheld shower mounts feature ball joints for ease of angle adjustment. If the mount isn't screwed on tightly enought, the weight of the handheld shower head will cause the mount to move. Simply by slightly hand-tightening the mount, you can eliminate this problem. Remember, don't over-tighten, which can cause the rubber gasket inside the mount to break.

Without knowing the details of your bathing needs, it's difficult to make that call.

A shower head will usually provide more water pressure than the handheld version of the that model. Typically, a shower head is also less expensive than the handheld version because of the lack of additional accessories, such as hoses and mounts, needed for installation.

A handheld shower provides flexibility because it can easily be moved to focus in on any needed area.

UPS does not base its shipping costs on the value of a product in a package, but on the weight and dimensions of the package being shipped. UPS also rounds up shipping weight to the nearest pound. Shower Arms with Female threading

Most brands of shower arms in the United States are made with male threading on both ends in order to replace your existing shower arm with very little effort. Occasionally there are brands, like Great Vibrations, that prefer to take a more internationally universal approach to designing their shower arms and have designed shower arms with male threading on the shower head end and female threading on the end closest to your shower wall. These arms can be used in American showers when installed in combination with a 1/2 inch pipe nipple (usually purchased separately). What's the difference between purchasing a shower head with with a brass ball joint or a plastic ball joint?

Besides the obvious answer of being made from different materials, there are both pros and cons of each type. Brass ball joints are more durable than ABS (plastic ball joints). However, Teflon tape is required to ensure a true leak-free shower head installation. Question: Hello I was wondering if you would know what company made this controller?

Answer: It doesn't seem to be made by Grohe, Moen, Dornbracht, American Standard, Hansgrohe, or Delta. This looks similar to either a Jado or Price Pfister pressure balance valve. The valve trim kit seems to be missing. This may have been a part of a builder pack where the showerhead, spout and valve are included in one package. If this is the case, the shower head and tub spout would be made by the same company.

Also, do you know where the item was purchased? Is the project on a budget or is it a luxury installation? That helps narrow down the possibilities. Builder packs are often available at larger big-box retailers currently favored by some contractors.

Measure the diameter of the large chrome tube coming out from the wall. If possible, find a screw that threads into the center spline (right in the middle). Take the measurement and screw along with these pictures and visit your local plumbing showroom.

You may be able to attach a Jado or Price Pfister trim to it, or maybe even a Grohe trim. If the screw matches up with the screw supplied with a selected trim, you are close, If the hole in the center of the trim is larger than the chrome piece you measured, you're closer. The last part is making sure the valve handle fits onto the spline (the brass piece in the middle with the teeth that accepts the valve handle).

Can I use pipe dope on my shower head or hand held shower?

Never use pipe dope or plumbers putty to install shower fittings like shower heads, hand held shower head sets or tub spouts. It may react with plastic components causing them to break.

The best way to ensure a leak-free installation is by wrapping the shower arm pipe threads several times with Teflon tape to create a water tight seal.

Question About Gold-colored Finishes

We have been looking for a hand held plastic gold colored shower head. We need something light weight and gold in color to go with our gold fixtures. We have a good flexible hose but the head is metal and we are afraid my granddaughter will drop it and chip the tub. Do you carry any hand held like that or know if someone else carries one?

There are two finishes when it comes to "gold". One is actual 24 karat gold plating and the other is brass plating. Brass corrodes quickly, but it has recently been replaced by most manufacturers with titanium to allow for a longer finish life. These finishes are often referred to with a name that promotes its longevity live "lifeshine", "diamond brass" or similar. The basic difference between gold and brass is the color: Gold is redder, brass is yellower.

The brass/titanium finishes are offered by most manufacturers and can be found at any local bath showroom or hardware store. The gold finish is a specialty and is primarily available through kitchen and bath showrooms. High-end manufacturers include Grohe, Hansgrohe and Ondine.

I would look for a bath showroom in your area and visit them to ensure you get the right finish. Bringing your hose with you as a sample will help you match the finish.

Removing calcium build up from a shower head or hand held shower

For high calcium build up on a shower head or hand held shower head, unscrew the shower head from the shower arm or the hand held shower head from the shower hose. Soak the face of the shower head or hand held shower head overnight in a solution of 50% white vinegar/50% water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, clean cloth. Brush off any remaining mineral deposits if necessary.

Caution: Never use harsh chemicals, heavy duty cleaners or abrasives when cleaning your shower head. They can ruin the finish.

QUESTION:I had placed above order with you a week ago. I have received all 3 showerheads, but it appears that they have been used before or returned? All three heads had water inside the head as well as packing.

Waterpik no longer offers this item and does not offer an equal replacement under their warranty. Shower Head Gallons Per Minute and Tankless Water Heaters

QUESTION: We recently installed a Bosch Aqua Star 250sx tankless hot water heater and are finding that the shower does not allow enough Gallons per Minute to run the unit? I have totally cleaned everything of any build up that might effect the rate, but nothing has helped. We are on a well that is at a constant 50psi. Do you sell any hand held shower units that might
allow more GPM's?

ANSWER: The minimum flow rate on the Bosch Aqua Star 250sx tankless hot water heater is 0.8 GPM. Given that you have 50PSI, all the showerheads and hand held showers available through the Shower Store run about 2.5 GPM at 50PSI, which should be enough for your unit.

Question regarding the use of massage spray features in low water pressure areas.

QUESTION: I have low water pressure in my house. I am thinking of purchasing the Moen, model 21075W, revolution massaging hand held shower head set. I need to really feel the massage action water flow on my neck. Would this be a good choice? Is it hard to remove the water saver device? If the model is not a good choice, can you recommend another one. I was also looking at the Quattro Massage hand held shower head set by Interbath, model JQ922CH.

ANSWER: If you have low water pressure in your house, a hand held shower is probably not for you. Water pressure is often reduced with this type of model because the water has to travel through the hose, the shower handle and out the shower head. Massage and aeration features also reduce water pressure. Because you really need a massage spray function and you want the maximum water pressure possible, I recommend that you get a fixed shower head. Tips on Increasing Water Pressure

Remove the Flow Restrictor

All shower heads and hand held shower head sets sold in the United States contain a flow restrictor, also known as a flow controller, as required by the National Energy Act that limit water flow to 2.5 gallons per minute. This helps save water and energy, which could help you save money on your utility bill. Removing the shower head or hand held shower flow restrictor will increase your water and energy consumption. It will also increase the amount of water flowing through your shower head or hand held shower haed for increased water pressure through your shower head or hand held shower.

To remove the flow restrictor, remove the shower head from the shower arm supply pipe or the hand held shower head from the hand held shower hose. If you cannot remove the shower head by hand, use a rag and a wrench – the rag will help protect your shower head's finish.

Depending on the model, you may need to remove the gasket, which is a small, black, donut-shaped piece of rubber in the shower head inlet or hand held shower's handle. Use a long skinny tool like a slotted screwdriver to carefully pull the gasket from the shower head inlet. Remove the gasket carefully so you do not damage the shower head threads. Also be careful not to tear the gasket. If you do tear it, don't reuse it. When you reinstall the shower head, use Teflon tape instead.

The flow restrictor is the piece of plastic at the inlet of the shower head or hand held shower head's handle. Sometimes it's pink and behind a star-shaped piece of metal. sometimes it's green. Other manufacturers make theirs white. Whatever the color, remove these pieces by using a long, thin tool like a slotted screwdriver. Catch an edge of the flow controller or restrictor with the corner of the screwdriver and give the piece a twist with your wrist. The flow restrictor will pop out of the shower head or hand held shower.

If you live in an area of low water pressure, removing the flow restrictor will not substantially change the pressure you get through the shower head or hand held shower head. Check our section on "shower heads and hand held showers that are good for low pressure areas."

Remember, by removing the flow restrictor your utility bill may increase. You will also be using more of our natural resources. Keep the restrictor handy in case your want to re-install in your shower head or hand held shower in the future.
